“Ivan Vazov” Public Library from Plovdiv

Veřejná knihovna „Ivana Vazova“ v PlovdivuDuring EMBARK project coordinated by the Czech National Library and funded by European Commission (September 2010 – April 2012) Manuscriptorium won another new partner which is Bulgarian “Ivan Vazov”  Public Library from Plovdiv.
“Ivan Vazov”  Public Library was founded in 1879. It is a public, universal and research library and functions as the second national depository of Bulgarian printed output, i.e., an enactment entitles the library to a copy of each printed publication. The Freedom of the Press Act, adopted on October 27 1881, was of great significance for the development of the Plovdiv Library as a national library. According to its Paragraph 3, the library was entitled to a copy of all publications on the territory of Eastern Roumelia. The library holdings grew larger and richer as patriotic Bulgarians donated valuable manuscripts, Revival period books and unique editions.
The library keeps valuable Slavonic manuscripts, documents and archives from the Bulgarian Revival and the first years of the post-liberation period, rare and unique world editions. Over 350 manuscripts on parchment and paper reveal the development of the Bulgarian book from medieval times to the present. The collections include traditional and non-traditional formats with no limitations as to kind, language and content. The collection of periodical publications is exceptionally interesting. At present, the entire library collection amounts to about 1.5 million library documents.
Today “Ivan Vazov” Public Library is a contemporary and modern with regard to its architecture, holdings and operational organization cultural and information institution. In the course of time, its cultural programme has become all the richer and more diverse. Organized exhibitions, meetings with eminent artists, book premiers, music lectures and evenings, etc. have turned the library into an important centre of cultural life in Plovdiv. The library participates in the unique annual “Plovdiv reads” festivities of the city in June.
The Library is engaged in active publishing of a Year-book, current and retrospective indexes, thematic bibliographies, books.
